Meaning of a Samvatsara:

The Hindu calendar has a cycle of 60 years and they are named from Prabhava to Akshaya. A “Samvatsara” is a Sanskrit word for year.  It means a period of one sidereal year when Sun enters the sign of Aries.  Sixty samvatsaras repeat in a cycle. Every 60 years, both Jupiter and Saturn reach the 0 degree of Mesha.  The time in which the planet Jupiter in average transits one sign is known as “Samvatsara” or  year.  Jupiter takes 12 years to complete the transit into all the rashis.  And Saturn takes on an average 30 years to transit through all the rashis.  Taking the lowest common multiple of Jupiter and Saturn we get 60, which is the number of Samvatsaras/years.  Hence, we see major impact of the planets Saturn and Jupiter on the samvatsaras because of their aspects, angular formations etc. on each other.
