This is the second article in the series about “Marriage Astrology”

In this article, we will discuss one of the important parameters in marriage compatibility “Kuja dosha” or “Mangal dosh”. Planet Mars is also known as Kuja.  Mars is a fierce and warrior planet, known as Senapati or Commander in chief.  Mars is the planet of energy, aggressiveness, strength, and courage.  A well-placed Mars gives courage, confidence, and determination in life.  Whereas if it is malefic in a chart it makes one uncultured, rash, and rude in behavior. Another name for Kuja is Mangal, which is the synonym for auspiciousness.  Mars, if well placed will give good rajayogas and success in life.  Mars represents surgeons, law and order, mechanical engineers, all kinds of defense services, land, and real estate.  It causes accidents, disputes, wounds, and burns. Mars also represents brother/siblings of a native. Mars is an active and impulsive planet, it makes one react easily without thinking adequately.  When anger predominates, one cannot think clearly which results in bad decision making.

Mangal dosha as per scriptures and famous astrologers:

In Brihat Parashara Hora Shashtra by Sage Parashara, mentioned that if Mars is present in the 1st house, 4th house,7th house, 8th house, or 12th house the person would lose his/her spouse (dosha is formed).

As per Deva Keralam, if Mars is present in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house the person will lose his/her spouse (Kuja dosha is formed).

Few scholars like Dr.B.V.Raman et all have considered the 2nd house Mars also as dosha.  As 2nd house represents the family as well as maraka bhava of the person.  Through its 4th aspect, it affects the 5th house of progeny.  Mars aspects 8th house with the 7th aspect affects the longevity of marriage as well as spouse.

Kuja Dosha or Mangal Dosha is formed:

  1. When the planet Mars is placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th house from ascendant, it forms Kuja /Mangalndosha. Some of them even treat Kuja in 2nd house also as Kuja dosha.
  2. Kuja dosha is seen from the Birth chart, Moon chart, and Venus chart.
  3. If the Kuja dosha is formed in all the above three charts it is considered to be heavy Kuja dosha.
  4. Chart/Kundali analysis at the time of marriage is done to see the cancellation factors of Kuja dosha, as part of the marriage compatibility.
  5. Generally, Astrologers suggest remedies be performed before the wedding.
  6. Few astrologers believe that Kuja dosha gets canceled after 28 years of a boy or girl.

Misconception of Kuja Dosha/Manglik Dosha:

Unfortunately, so much importance is given to Kuja dosha many marriages are delayed or even denied in search of suitable Kuja dosha nullifying matches.  It is a cause for a lot of anxiety, stress to the parents.  Moreso, the point where Kuja dosha needs to be seen from all the three Birth chart, Moon chart and Venus chart, this rule encompasses more than 75% of the human population, which makes us all Mangaliks/Kuja dosha.  Hence, rationally thinking this dosha cannot be taken seriously.  To add fuel to the fire, we find many astrologers analyse superficially and jump to the conclusions, each one differs from the other.  Parents of marriageable age children run from one astrologer to another.  It is accepted that kuja dosha should not be ignored, but they're also exist many canceling factors where Kuja dosha gets nullified, this fact is being completely overlooked at the present times.

Kuja dosha gets cancelled in an individual’s chart if:

  1. Mars is in its own house, or in exalted house.
  2. Mars is conjunct with Moon, or Jupiter or aspected by Moon or Jupiter
  3. For Mesha, Vrishabha, Tula and vrsichika lagnas if Mars is placed is in 1st, 2nd, 7th, or 8th houses there is no Kuja dosham.
  4. For Simha lagna no kuja dosha if Kuja is placed in 12th house of Karkataka Rasi.
  5. Ashtakavarga bindus of Mars is 5 or more in the dosha houses, it will reduce the impact of the dosha.
  6. The degrees of Mars in a house matters like a) if Mars is 2 degrees at 7th house, then it moves to 6th house in bhava, this cancels the dosha. B) if Mars is in 29 degrees in the 8th house, then it will move to the 9th house in the bhava, this cancels the dosha.

If there is no cancellation of Kuja dosha in one’s chart, then marrying a person with Kuja dosha will nullify and will give longevity to the marriage.

Kuja Dosha effects based on the placement of Mars:

  1. 1st House Mars (Self): Person will be stubborn, fierce, rash decision making, and incoherent. A person picks up quarrel quickly.
  2. 2nd house Mars (Family): differences with family members, expenditure, and worries.
  3. 4th house Mars (domestic & house): Lack of domestic peace, desire for material needs, high expectation from family members causing restlessness.
  4. 7th house Mars (relationship with a spouse): unhappy married life, differences with the spouse on very minor matters.
  5. 8th house Mars (longevity, death): Spouse longevity and even marital longevity (divorce) may get affected.
  6. 12th house Mars (hospitalisation and bed pleasures): Health of a spouse may be delicate. There will be lack of bed pleasures due to various reasons.

Effects of Kuja dosha person married to non-Kuja dosha person are:

  1. Those with Mars in Lagna are aggressive and short tempered. They get excited quickly, hence will make impulsive decisions.
  2. They are very competitive, this competitive nature even will show in the marital relationship, this will affect the relationship.
  3. Severe tension and differences in married life may lead to divorce.
  4. This even affects the financial situation.
  5. There will be differences with either side family members, resulting in restlessness in life.
  6. The differences in married life may even go to the extent of physical fights.

Hence, when two people would like to get into a matrimonial relationship, proper analysis for the position of Mars in both their charts needs to be seen.  Kuja dosha should not be taken as a symbol of marital disaster.  There are other malefic planets like Sani, Rahu, etc, whose placement will create equal or more havoc.  For marriage compatibility, analysis of both boy and the girl chart should be done as a whole and all the parameters need to be properly studied before arriving at a decision. Experienced Astrologers can guide well and will suggest remedies to reduce the impact of Kuja dosha in married life.

  2. Performing Milk abhishekam to Lord Subramanya on Tuesday.
