Mythology #1

Nirruti the diety of Moola nakshatra is associated with Kali in the form of Dhumavati.  She is mentioned in a few hymns in the Vedas, mostly to seek protection. In the Vedas she is described as a dark person dressed in dark clothes.  She is mentioned as living in the southwest area of the kingdom of the dead.

Mythology #2

In the Mahabharata Nirruti is the daughter of Adharma (unrighteousness) and Himsa (violence) and the mother of three sons – Bhaya (fear), Maha bhaya (great fear), and Mrithyu (death).

Brahma’s creative energy was very powerful.  Narada popped out from his lap, Daksha came out of his thumb, Vasishta came out of his breath, Brighu came out of his skin, Kratu came out of his hand, Pulaha out of his navel, Pulastya came out of his ear, Angira came out of his mouth and so on.  In this process, Nirruti came out of his anus. Thus, Brahma’s creations came out of his body and mind.  According to Agni Purana the spirit of the “doer of bad deeds” leaves the body through the anus.  That is if the Jiva leaves the body through lower parts (than the head)then the future of the Jiva is bound to the lower worlds.

In Taittariya Samhita which lists various animals to be sacrificed to the gods, the pigeon, owl, and the hare are listed as being sacrifices to Nirruti.  Both pigeons and owls were considered to be inauspicious birds.  There are stories that the spirits of those who have suffered untimely deaths take on the form of owls.

Mythology #3

Goddess Lakshmi has an elder sister known as Alakshmi–Jyestha.  The story goes as when Rakshas and Gods were churning the ocean the first that came out of the ocean was a deadly poison known as halahala. From that halahala was born an elder sister of Lakshmi, Jyeshta devi. Jyeshta had a dark complexion, with a flabby belly, thick thighs, raised nose, and hanging lower lip.  Dressed in dark clothes, she was ugly to look at and nobody wanted to take her as wife.

After the birth of Jyeshta, Lakhsmi was born from the same ocean.  Lakshmi was the complete opposite of Jyeshta.  She was bright, beautiful and joyful. Vishnu accepted Lakshmi immediately as his wife.  But, Lakshmi wanted her elder sister also to get married.  She requested Vishnu to find a husband for Jyeshta.  On a lot of searches, Sage Dussaha agreed to marry Jyeshta.

Immediately upon the marriage, Sage Dussaha started regretting his decision.  Jyeshta was lazy and constantly sad.  She did not have any interest in anything auspicious. Wherever she went she would bring grief, poverty, hunger, and sorrow. Dussaha finally abandoned Jyeshta under a peepal tree. Jyeshta was extremely angry and started to cry and lament.  In her grief and jealousy towards Lakshmi, she decided to curse every house with poverty, grief and sorrow,  thus becoming Alakshmi “the unlucky one”.  Lakshmi took pity on her elder sister and placed her as one of the nakshatras – Jyeshta nakshatra”.
