Demons created chaos in the universe, and then Devas approached Lord Vishnu, who suggested churning of the ocean “Samudra Madhanam”. The serpent Vasuki which was around Lord Siva was used as the rope around the mountain, which was used for churning the ocean.  Asuras were holding the head and Devas the tail while churning.  Asuras got affected by the poisonous fumes from Vasuki.  In the process, the halahala (poison) came from the ocean and poisonous fumes from the serpent which was consumed by Lord Siva to protect the universe.

Mythology #2

Sage Kashyapa has thirteen wives.  Out of the thirteen wives Vinata and Kadru wanted to have children.  After doing all the rituals and prayers as per their desire Kadru gave birth to a thousand snakes and Vinata to two sons Arun and Garuda.  Aruna is the charioteer of Lord Sun and Garuda is the vahana of Lord Vishnu.  Kadruhas always had differences of opinion and was jealous of her sister Vinata, as her sons were revered more.  To take revenge or displeasure Kadru invites Vinata to a competition to identify the right colour of horsetail.  One who loses will have to become the slave of the other.  Kadru with the help of her children paints a white horse's tail into black.  Vinata loses the competition and she along with her sons becomes slaves of Kadru.  This resulted in a bad relationship between snakes and Garuda.
