Mythology #1

At a grand event, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Shani (Saturn) met and began a spirited conversation. During their exchange, Lord Shani declared, “I am greater than you because I uphold dharma in the world and represent righteousness.”

Furious, Goddess Lakshmi replied, “I am greater than you because I bring fortune, wealth, and prosperity to the world.”

Lord Shani countered, “But you do not remain with one person for long, and you lack the power of discrimination. You sometimes stay with evil-minded individuals.”

Goddess Lakshmi responded sharply, “Perhaps, but people invite me into their lives and offer prayers to seek my blessings, while they fear you and pray for your departure.”

Lord Shani argued, “When you fall into the wrong hands, it becomes my duty to correct those individuals. You create maya (illusion) in people’s lives, but my role is to dispel that illusion and force them to face truth and reality.”

Seeking a resolution, Goddess Lakshmi suggested, “Let us ask Lord Brahma to settle this matter.”

Lord Shani agreed, and they approached Lord Brahma with their question: “Who among us is greater?” Lord Brahma, aware of the potential consequences of his answer, diplomatically redirected them to Lord Vishnu.

When they posed the same question to Lord Vishnu, he directed them to Sage Narada. Finally, they approached Sage Narada, asking him to decide.

Sage Narada, known for his wisdom and tact, smiled and said, “Both of you are equally great! Goddess Lakshmi, you are great when you walk toward someone, bringing fortune and prosperity. However, you are not as great when you walk away, leaving them in despair. Lord Shani, you are great when you walk away, relieving someone of their troubles, but not as great when you approach, as your presence often signifies challenges and hardships.  Both of you play essential roles in helping humanity achieve the ultimate goal of salvation. Through contentment with material gains or disillusionment with their emptiness, people eventually turn toward self-exploration and spirituality. Sometimes, out of utter helplessness, they seek God. You both guide humanity, albeit in different ways, toward enlightenment and liberation.” Pleased with Sage Narada’s insightful answer, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Shani left in harmony, acknowledging their complementary roles.

Interestingly, Goddess Lakshmi is associated with Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra, while Lord Shani rules this Nakshatra. Over time, those born under this star are believed to turn toward the ultimate goal of enlightenment and emancipation, balancing material success with spiritual realization.
