Mythology #1

The Bhagavata Purana describes that Vishnu descended as the  Vamana Avatara to restore the authority of Indra over the heaven, which was taken by Mahabali, an Asura King.  Maha Bali was the great-grandson of Hiranyakashipu, grandson of Prahlada, and son of Virochana.

Vamana, in the guise of a short Brahmin carrying an umbrella, went to the king and requested three paces of land.  Maha Bali agreed against the warnings of his Guru Shujracharya.  Vamana then revealed his true identity enlarged to gigantic proportions and covered all three worlds with his two feet.  He stepped from heaven to earth with the first step and from earth to the nether world with the second. And for his third pace, Mahabali offered his head.  Vamana then placed his foot and gave the king immortality for his humility.  Mahabali is seen as a symbol of prosperity and love.

Spiritual significance:

Mahabali symbolizes prosperity, the three feet symbolize the three planes of existence  Jagrat, Swapna and Sushupti and the final step is on Mahabali's head which elevates from all three states and he attains moksha.
