Shatabhisha Nakshatra ranges from 6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees of Kumbha Rasi. The presiding deity for Shatabhisha nakshatra is Varuna (Dark Sun). The Shatabhisha nakshatra symbol is an Empty circle. The planetary ruler is Rahu.

Shatabhisha Nakshatra:

Shatabhisha comes from the sanskrit words Shata means One hundred and Bhishaja means remedy.  Hence, Shatabhisha means “hundred cures”. This also indicates one hundred healers, one hundred physicians, etc.  This shows the healing ability and strength

The main presiding deity is Varuna.  He is the god of the rain, all water elements, and aquatic beings.  Varuna is also referred to as the “Dark Sun”. He is a mystical healer and lord of Maya. Varuna is known as the Chief of the Asuras.

The symbol is an Empty circle. This represents mystery, realization, unknown, and self-containment.

The planetary ruler is Rahu. It is the North node of the Moon and the disembodied head of the demon Rahu.  Rahu gives disease, ego, trouble, and radical change.

Mythology #1

Sage Kashyapa once prepared to perform a great yagna. All arrangements were complete, but, he could not procure a suitable cow for the Yagna. So he stole a cow, Kamadhenu, from the cattle shed of Varuna.  Kashyapa’s wives Aditi and Surasa concealed the cow in the ashrama as the sage started performing the Yagna.

When Varuna came to know that his heavenly cow was taken by Sage Kashyapa, he went and demanded for the same.   Kashyapa was not inclined to return it.  Annoyed Varuna cursed his own father Kashyapa “ May you be born as a human being on Earth and tend the cows.  Both your wives would be born there as well.  The calves of my cow are in distress without their mother. As a consequence, Aditi would suffer confinement as well as loss of her children”.

After that Varuna went to Lord Brahma and informed him of all that had happened.  Lord Brahma summoned Sage Kashyapa and asked him why he had not returned the cow to Varuna and how could Kashyapa stoop to such a lowly act of theft and greed.  He also cursed Kashyapa to be born as an earthling along with his two wives and serve as a cowherd.

Sage Kashyapa then was born on earth as Vasudeva.  His wives Aditi and Surasa were born as Devaki and Rohini respectively,  the mothers of Krishna and Balarama.
