In the series of Nakshatras the eighth nakshatra is Pushyami.  Detailed information on the Nakshatra, its characteristic, gender, gana and all the details are given below:

Pushyami Nakshatra ranges from 3 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes in Karkataka rasi.   The presiding deity for Pushyami nakshatra is Deva Guru Brihaspati, Guru and mentor of Gods. Guru Brihaspati represents truthfulness. Pushyami nakshatra symbol is Milk yielding udder of a cow.  The planetary ruler is Saturn.

Pushyami Nakshatra:

Pushyami word comes from the Sanskrit word “Posha” which means nourishing or  “The nourisher or the nurturer”.  Another meaning of Pushya is “One who nourishes” indicating vitality, strength, and a caring nature. The name from Rigveda is “Tishya”, the celestial Archerer, This nakshatra is also known as Sidhya.  

The symbol of Milk yielding udder of cow indicate natural nurturing qualities, it indicates undemanding providing nature The four udders of the cow also indicate Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha of life.

Characteristics:

Pushyami nakshatra natives will have a broader perspective on life.  They would like to know about all the things happening around them.  Hence, they will be learned in many areas.  They will be intelligent, bold, helpful, wealthy, and independent. Mythology #1

Sage Narada advised Sage Angirasa and his wife Sradha to pray to lord Agni for children.  The couple prayed intensely to Lord Agni by performing all the Agnikaryas (fire rituals).  The please Agni deva appears before the sage and grants him a boon. Sage Angirasa asked for a son who will be blessed with extraordinary wisdom, matchless intellect, and intelligence.  Lord Agni grants him the boon. Soon Shradha becomes pregnant and delivers a baby boy.  Sage Angirasa names the baby boy as “Brihaspati”.  Sage Narada, at the naming ceremony, announced on behalf of Trimurtis that Brihaspati will become a most knowledgeable and perfect person and will have a special place among the Navagrahas (9 planets).  At the correct age Sage Angiras started Brihaspati education.  At a young age itself, he excelled in all the sastras and was wise.  Thus, he became a great scholar and advisor under the guidance of the father and the grace of Lord Agni.

Mythology #2

The Deva guru Brihaspati’s wife is Tara.  Brihaspati was engaged in rituals and was indifferent toward Tara’s needs. This made Tara to elope with Chandra (Moon).  In spite of repeated requests by Brihaspati Tara does not return back.  Deeply hurt Birhaspati seeks Devas help in getting back Tara.  Tara comes back to Brihaspati, but, she was pregnant with Chandra’s child.  Brihaspati accepts but with great anger.  The child born ins Budha (Mercury)
