Mythology #1

Bhaga, the ruling deity of Purva Phalguni nakshatra is one of the Adityas, a son of Aditi and sage Kashyapa.  He is the god of wealth, money, and due inheritance.

Once Daksha was performing a big yagna.  He invited all the devas including Bhaga.  Bhaga was one of the presiding priests at the yagna.  Daksha did not invite Shiva and his wife Sati (Daksha’s daughter). Daksha had enmity with Shiva.  Inspite of not being invited Sati comes to the Yagna and is insulted by Daksha.  Because of the insult, Sati self-immolates herself in the homa, knowing this Shiva gets angry. He sends Virabhadra and Bhadrakali to destroy the yagna and kill Daksha.  In the process, Virabhadra blinds the Bhaga, the priest of the yagna.  After this incident, Bhaga starts giving away his wealth, without any second thought and not seeing if the person deserves to receive the donation or not.

Mythology #2

Devas conduct yagna without apportioning havis to Shiva (In any yagna all the Trimurtis are given Havis- yagna bhaga). In anger Shiva attacks and disrupts the yagna, in the ensuing battle Bhaga is blinded.  Once Shiva is pacified and regains normalcy, Bhaga’s eyesight is restored.

Mythology #3

Shiva, happy with the prayers of the seven sages decides to visit their ashrama.  Shiva arrives at the ashrama in his Kapali form(naked form).  Women in the ashrama were shocked to see Shiva’s naked form.  This act of Shiva angered the sages, and they cursed him.  As Shiva showed his lingam, they cursed Shiva’s lingam to fall off. This act of sages resulted in the disruption of the universe.  Lord Brahma, the creator, asks Saptarishis to worship the fallen lingam.  Sages started worshiping the Lingam.  Being pleased with the Sages' prayers, Lord Shiva’s fury was contained and the universe balance is found.
